The Bursary Fund
To support the increasing need for bursaries, we are committed to growing the Bursary Fund through The High School of Glasgow Educational Trust.
Deep within the people-centred values and ethos of the School has always been the recognition that access to a High School education should be available to all who demonstrate the ability and drive to benefit from, and contribute to, school life and financial barriers to entry should not hinder them.
It is also part of our historic legacy as the Town School, as once known, to enrich the educational opportunities available to the young people of Glasgow and the West, and in doing so making a difference not only to their lives, but to the lives of others.
We strive to offer a place at the Senior School to all those who meet our requirements, however, the number of bright individuals eligible for a means-tested bursary place is rising. More than ever, many qualify for full fee remission, but due to the limits of our current Bursary Fund, we must turn away young people of promise for whom a High School education would be life-changing.
Our goal of expanding the Bursary Fund will enable us to welcome as many of these individuals as possible. Not only does this benefit them, but it benefits the whole school, raising academic standards, ensuring inclusivity and diversity within our community, enriching the learning experience for all. Ensuring the High School is more accessible to the children of Glasgow aligns perfectly with the true spirit, ethos, values and roots of the School – a school that has evolved as the city of Glasgow itself has evolved.
Since the launch of the Bursary Fund in 1977, around 300 young people have benefitted from an education at the High School. In session 2022/23, approximately 10% of Senior School pupils (60) received some form of bursary funding. Of the 60 pupils, 50 received bursaries of 50% or more, with 17 pupils receiving 100% fee remission.
Our aim is to double our current Bursary Fund from £4 million to £8 million.
While we know this is an ambitious target, we can think of no better legacy arising from our 900th anniversary year.
Funding a Senior School Bursary
Funding a Senior School Bursary is a truly transformative gift. Your generosity can shape the future of a young person, opening them up to endless possibilities to learn, grow and excel.
Donations at all levels to the Bursary Fund are hugely valued and appreciated, and are invested carefully for long-term return, with annual income used to provide the necessary bursarial support.
The funding required for a 100% bursary to support a pupil from Transitus (Primary 7) through to Senior 6 requires donations of approximately £125,000 at session 23/24 levels.
