Sports stars out in force for 900th anniversary
On Saturday 23rd March 2024, many current and former pupils and their families descended on Old Anniesland for a sporting festival, one of many events planned this year to mark HSOG’s 900th anniversary.
Eight hockey teams competed in a Hockey 5’s tournament with 10 rugby teams taking part in a 7-a-side touch rugby tournament. It was a day of four seasons: with sunshine, showers, rainbows and a few gusty spells, keeping our sportspeople on their toes in changeable conditions.
It was the perfect opportunity for many former pupils to return to the playing fields of their youth, unlocking fond memories. Some even dusted off their old hockey and rugby strips which was great to see! Brushing shoulders with former pupils were current pupils, parents and members of staff, highlighting the sense of community at the heart of HSOG. Family and friends lent their support as enthusiastic spectators on the side lines, with many very young fans out in force to cheer on their parents.
Despite the herculean efforts from all teams involved, there could only be one winner with the pupil team ‘Chicks with Sticks’ being crowned the Homecoming Heroes of the Hockey Festival. They played a tightly contested final against ‘Wildcats Reunited’ and the tournament was won with a golden goal!
Meanwhile, in a somewhat controversial twist, it was the HSOG staff team that were victorious in the Rugby Festival. With a number of former professional rugby players in the mix, they were at somewhat of an advantage! They played the ‘Soggy Boys’, a team made up of a number of our recent leavers, in an exciting final.
Afterwards, many had the chance to refresh their memories of HSOG’s hallowed halls on a tour of the Senior School and were able to catch up with old friends at the bar in the Pavilion.
We thank everyone who came down to Old Anniesland on Saturday and helped to make this 900th anniversary event a success!
